BBC Commercial

BBC2”s commercial for “School Season” draws viewers in by appealing to their emotions and also by using a little bit of mystery. It begins with young children getting dressed and doing morning activities. The final child employs the help of his mother to put on his outfit which happens to be an astronaut costume. His mom wipes of his helmet and helps him out the door into what you expect to be a normal front yard. However, it actually opens into space and the child floats out the door with the headline “Every September thousands of children begin the biggest adventure of their lives.” This is then followed by “Are you sure we are sending them in the right direction.”
I really like this commercials use of imagery. I can easily see how this would appeal to mothers. I am assuming that this would be their target demographic. Moms could imagine these children as their own young children who are getting ready to start their school journey. I especially loved how they used space a journey into the unknown as the child embarks upon his first school adventure.
I think that the choice of music suited the idea of this commercial very well and gave it an emotionally charged and inspirational feel. I assume that they also used a green screen to create the space scene. I’m not sure what other production techniques they would have used. Perhaps they used lighting effects to create the morning scene.
Overall I think this is a really good commercial. I like its message and the way it is presented. I wouldn’t change anything in this commercial because it hooked me when I saw it. I strangely became personally invested in it even though I’m pretty sure I would not be in their target audience.
